Transitions that involve letting go are a regular part of life, yet can be some of the most complex situations to navigate. Even positive changes, like beginning a new chapter, retiring, downsizing, can pose challenges. As I face the potential of a transition, I am reflecting on what’s involved in this rite of passage.

I’m surrounded by people navigating life-altering changes. Some are changing jobs, retiring, downsizing, grieving losses, or redefining who they are after years of familiar routines. My own transition involves deciding whether to step away from consulting work I’ve done for twenty years. Surprisingly, I’m having a hard time letting it go.
I’ve realized there are a few truths that help.
THERE ARE DISTINCT CHAPTERS TO LIFE.
The Law of Rhythm reminds us that life moves in seasons, yet our culture rewards constant motion. We often resist slowing down because we’ve attached our identity to what we do. It’s hard to release what has been meaningful. I still love contributing, but it may be time to roll up one aspect of my national consultation. The travel has become onerous, and I no longer feel the same opportunity to learn and grow.
LET YOUR PASSION AND PURPOSE GUIDE YOU
Does the transition align with your passion and purpose? Change becomes easier when it moves you toward something rather than simply away. Ask what is waiting to emerge that doesn’t currently have room? For me, the answer is clear. I want more time to think, write, create, and deepen my spiritual life. Every time I imagine that possibility, the transition feels less like a loss and more like an invitation.
ACCEPTANCE CREATES GRACE
Resisting change often creates more suffering than the change itself. My father worked well into his eighties because he feared the emptiness retirement might bring. Acceptance doesn’t mean giving up, it means making peace with life’s natural rhythm. and finding what wants to happen next. When we stop fighting what is ending, we have the grace to become available for what is beginning.
What transition are you facing? Perhaps letting go isn’t just asking you to lose something, but to make space for something new.
